Overview

Overview

Pgraters is a platform that unites basketball players, coaches, officials, organisers, and enthusiasts around Africa, from the playground to the professional leagues.

Before now, there was a limited to non-existent digital database for African basketball communities, which prompted the need for one. I worked alongside a cross-functional team to bring this project's vision to life.

The creation of this platform digitalises visibility and exposure to basketball professionals in Africa, making it a go-to platform for accessing players' data and statistics. I collaborated with engineers, product managers, product designers, business analysts, and other key stakeholders. In conceptualising and achieving our goal, we focused on data collection, data cleaning, data visualisation, player visibility, player engagement, Community, and more, which led to outcomes such as over 1000 Onboarded Users, 800 Active Users, an 80% Retention Rate, an 80% Engagement rate, and more.

The Challenge

Enable easy access to basketballers' data in Africa

Enable easy access to basketballers' data in Africa

At PGraters, creating basketball events and talent management was the core of our business. Having done this for some years, we realised there are some core challenges we face in the African basketball community, these are;

  • We needed a way to access data on African basketballers across the continent from cities to remote areas.

  • There are talented basketballers in remote areas that are not known due to lack of exposure, having a platform for them can turn them into stars

  • Many local basketball teams and individuals want to participate in tournaments but don't have access to them

These are the main challenges Pgraters was created to solve.

Deep diving into problem solving

Deep diving into problem solving

To get started, we had a substantial amount of data from previous competitions organised across Nigeria, which provided us with a foundation for understanding our problem. We analysed the data collected from the competitions and held several meetings with key stakeholders to clarify the issues, while we utilised existing communities to gather insights.

Our research questions revolved around the following;

  • How do players find competition?

  • How do players get visibility in local or remote areas?

  • How do we get the actual statistics of players and competitions?

  • How do scouts find talents, especially in remote areas?

For each discovery, we created easier and better alternatives that offer the best value for our users. This involved different levels of design which included, brainstorming ideas, developing & testing Information architecture, testing low-fidelity design in some aspects, Testing and reviewing final designs with key stakeholders, testing with end users and iterating based on feedback. Below are some key features of the application

Conclusion

Pgraters had its soft launch, focusing on aspects of the mobile app such as social interactions, player onboarding, session creation and management, peer-to-peer reviews, and more. It has been adopted by a large number of people within our existing database. More features will be released incrementally. The app has given members of our community access to events and the network. The admin app is still in progress, and upon completion, it will enable tournament organisers to upload actual competition and player statistics.
